Eek-a-mouse is a real legend in the reggae scene. Born Ripton Joseph Hylton in Kingston, Jamaica, he’s one of the early artists to be described as a “singjay”, a combination of singer and deejay. Eek-a-mouse has created a style all his own, and gone on to become something of an international phenomenon quite apart from the rest of the world of reggae. Since the first eighties, The Mouse –  as he is fond of calling himself – created an impressive and unheard combination of toasting and singing, with rhythmically compelling and texturally impressive embellishments, with a unique vocal technique, both melodic and “percussive”. Eek-A-Mouse began his music career in the late seventies, when he was in college, releasing two roots reggae singles under his own name. He adopted the stage name Eek-A-Mouse in 1979, taking the name of a racehorse he always bet on.
